LWPT Homes has been developed from the former Local Preachers Mutual Aid Association and what follows is a description of the LPMA services. Details for the LWPT are broadly similar but more widely drawn and serious enquirers are urged to contact the National Office at the address below. LWPT is a voluntary sector not-for-profit provider of care homes for elderly people.
LPMA Homes was founded in 1949 by the Methodist Local Preachers Mutual Aid Association to provide residential care for elderly Methodist Local Preachers and their dependents. The Society enjoys charity status.
Who can be accommodated?
To fulfil its charitable objects, accommodation will be offered only to people who meet one of the following criteria:
- Elderly Local Preachers of the Methodist Church and the Churches of the Wesleyan Reform Union (WRU).
- Elderly ordained Ministers of the Methodist Church and WRU, elderly members of the Methodist Diaconal order; elderly persons in training as Local Preachers and elderly lay preachers or retired lay preachers of other denominations.
- Elderly dependants of people in the two previous categories.
- Elderly members of the Methodist Church in good standing who, because of age and infirmity, are in need of care.
None of the homes is able to provide nursing care services.
Aims and Objectives
LWPT Homes aims to provide
- An excellent quality of life;
- At a price that represents good value for the high quality of care and accommodation provided;
- Christian family values in the life of the home, with daily prayers and regular celebrations of Holy Communion.
They aim to provide security for residents and to encourage them to maintain their independence within the framework of a Christian community. Residents are therefore encouraged to take an active interest in and make their own contribution to, their local church, the local community and the life of the Home.
Residents retain all their civil rights when entering the Home. These include the right to freedom of speech and expression of political and religious ideals, the right to protect themselves and their property through the law, the right to live out their chosen lifestyle, the right to personal privacy and to competent assessment and review of their needs. They also retain the right to exercise control and choice in a Care Home setting even if this allows risks to be taken, subject always to safeguarding other residents' welfare and interests. They also have the right to be fully informed about services available from all Public or Private Agencies.
Residents are therefore encouraged to discover the right balance for themselves, between their right to privacy and the benefits of sharing in the family life of the Home. The essential routines of the Home will always be administered with sensitivity to the individual needs and capacities of each Resident.
The standards of accommodation and care are generally regarded as among the best available. All rooms can be provided fully furnished, but residents are encouraged to bring some small items of familiar furniture with them to customise their surroundings. Staff are dedicated to the aim of enabling residents to enjoy the best possible quality of life and encouraged to see themselves as professionals in care. They are expected to be in sympathy with the aims and values of the Society.
Visits from relatives and friends of residents are welcomed at any time, but it is appreciated if staff are notified in advance of intended visits, especially if meals are required.
How to apply for residence.
- Please contact the Secretary of LWPT Homes at 89, High Street, Rickmansworth for an application form. As well as supplying personal data, you will be asked for some information about your health and financial resources, which is required to help us in assessing our ability to provide for your needs. All information received will be treated in the strictest confidence.
- If you wish, a representative of LWPT will visit you to tell you more about life in an LWPT Home, and to assist you in completing the application form.
- When a room becomes available for your possible application, a senior member of our staff will visit you to carry out a full assessment of your needs, and decide in principle whether or not we can meet them in our Homes.
- If necessary, arrangements will be made for an assessment by your local Social Services Department if you need assistance in paying the charges.
- We will also arrange for you to have a medical examination.
- We will then arrange for you to come into residence for a trial period to enable both you and ourselves to assess whether life in a care home is suitable for your needs. You should not take any steps to sell an existing home or give up a tenancy until the end of this period.
In addition to providing permanent accommodation, applications are welcomed for short term residence, often to provide respite for carers or enable them to take a holiday in confidence that the one for whom they are caring is being well looked after. Some of the Homes have rooms set apart for use only by short term residents.
Scales of Fees and Charges are available on request.
