Lectionary Thoughts for Palm Sunday
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Palm Sunday: Liturgy of the Palms (A)
Matthew 21: 1 - 11
The prophets foretold of
Deliverance to come
Through a King who is both
Humble and strong.
The Messiah's friends made
His entry possible in
Lending a humble beast
For him to ride.
The welcome of the people
Was both joyful and wrong
For Jesus was not a
Warrior King.
He was more than a king
He was a saviour for
Their sins and mine and
All of the world.

Psalm 118: 1 - 2, 19 - 29
The Love of god has been
From before the beginning
Of time itself. We stand
Amazed at such enduring Love.
This Love has prompted God
To come as one of us and
Share our being with all our
Hopes and fears, joys and sorrows.
This Love has prompted God
In Christ to show its
Nature in sacrifice and
Humble service for us.
Though we rejected Him
Then, now He is readily
Built into the very fabric
Of our society and ourselves.
Palm Sunday: Liturgy of the Passion (A)
Isaiah 50: 4 - 9a
How can I speak a word
In season unless I have
First listened to the Word?
How can I console the
Weary unless I have been
Consoled by the Living Word?
How can I live a life
Of discipline unless the
Word has first disciplined me?
How can I face the world
With my faith unless God
The Lord is my helper?
Thus with God the Lord
My life can be a source
Of wise consolation.

Psalm 31: 9 - 16 (cf. Job 30: 1 - 16)
That one should feel so abandoned
Beggars belief. Yet you, Lord,
Were in this state as you hung
Upon that dreadful cross.
Even so, not totally given up,
For your heavenly Father is
Always faithful in His
Love and compassion.
Thus you, in your suffering,
Have shown us the way whereby
We, too, may place our trust
Utterly in the Lord our God.
Palm Sunday: Liturgy of the Passion
Philippians 2: 5 - 11
For our sake you
Laid aside all the
Glory of heaven.
For our sake you
Accepted the limits
Of our form
For our sake you
Endured the shame
Of crucifixion.
For our sake you
Were raised in
Power from death.
For our sake we
Must acknowledge
You as Lord of all.

Matthew 26: 14 - 16; 24 - 25; 47 - 59
Judas
He simply was not what
I expected. We needed to
Be rid of the Roman
Occupiers.
We needed a real Messiah
Not a soft speaker and
Gentle healer, a
Warrior
We needed someone who
Would fire the nation
And stir their souls to
Action.
I had to force his hand
If he were arrested by
The Sanhedrin then he would
React.
I knew where he intended
To be for his quiet time
With his other friends,
Gethsemane
But how to identify him?
There would be confusion.
How best to point him out?
A kiss!

Matthew 26: 30 - 35, 69 - 75
Peter
He stirred something deep
Inside my very being. I
Felt like a real man when
He spoke,
He said we would all
Desert him when the
Hard test came and so
I spoke.
His reply chilled me to
The marrow. I simply
Could not bring myself to
Believe him.
The maid came, I denied
Him; she came again
And again and at dawn
The cock crowed.
For the first time in
My adult life I felt
Totally ashamed of myself
I wept.
