Lectionary Thoughts for Lent 5

This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Lent 5 Passion Sunday (A)
Ezekiel 37: 1 - 14

For all our great wealth,
Lord, we are "very dry".
The "spring of living water"
Is not at work within us.

For all our great knowledge,
Lord, we are "very dry".
We have lost the "fear of the Lord"
And we have no 'wisdom'.

For all our great 'liberty',
Lord we are "very dry".
We have made ourselves slaves
To our selfish amorality.

To gain real wealth
That is your will for us,
Lord, we crave your "spring of
Living water" welling up in us

To gain that true wisdom
Which is your guide for us,
Lord, we need to recover that
Awe for your saving Love of us.

To realise our true liberty
That is your way for us,
Lord, we need to become
Your children in faithfulness.

Lent 5 Passion Sunday (A)
Psalm 130

The 'depth' of our sin seems like
A bottomless quagmire
From which we call for
Salvation by the Lord

The 'depth' of sin needs a
Recognition of our
Dependence upon the
Lord for his steadfastness.

The 'depth' of sin has
Caused the Lord to come
To us in person to
Effect our salvation.

It is the unfailing
Love of the Lord that
Has "set us free from all
Our sin and sorrows".

Lent 5 Passion Sunday (A)
Romans 8: 6 - 11

We crave for a 'good life'
And surround ourselves
With material trappings,
But the Spirit of God alone
Makes 'good living' possible.

We crave for a 'peaceful life'
And surround ourselves
With the trappings of force;
But the Spirit of God alone
Makes for 'peaceful living'.

We crave for 'new quality of life'
And surround ourselves with
Pills, potions and 'practices'
But "dwelling in Christ" alone
Enables 'new quality of life'.

Lent 5 Passion Sunday (A)
John 11: 1 - 45

A very human story with
A superhuman ending;
A very human Christ with
The power of god alone.

A touching confrontation
With a marvellous response;
A faith full of deferment
With a present realisation.

A vision of Easter brilliance
In this our darkest season;
The promise for all Christians
Realised in Jesus' Hebrew friend.
