Lectionary Thoughts for Lent 4

This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Year A

Lent 4A
1 Samuel 16: 1 - 13

The ways of the Lord are often obscure;
But the end that's achieved is never
In doubt. We must trust to his
Guidance for God's 'foolishness' is
Greater than our 'wisdom', always.

The 'sight' of the Lord is different
From ours. We tend to be blinded
By outward appearances, but the
Lord 'sees' to the 'heart' of a
Person and knows their real 'beauty'.

Yet the Lord, with great wisdom
Chose to reveal all of the
Divine nature by taking out form
And sharing our limitations, that
We might share something of the divine.

Lent 4A
Psalm 23

The Lord chose a shepherd boy
To be a great king and poet.
The Lord chose to be a shepherd
To become a king and saviour.

The lord is a loving shepherd
Providing means for our
Good living, enabling us to
Know him even as he knows us.

The Lord is a caring shepherd
Who knows our weaknesses
And understands our grief;
In him we are always supported.

The Lord is a strengthening shepherd
Who builds up our capabilities.
The Lord is a companion shepherd
Who walks with us along life's ways.

Lent 4A
Ephesians 5: 8 - 14

Living in the 'light of Christ'
Offers a brilliant quality of life.
The 'goodness' that his Spirit brings;
The 'righteousness' that comes by faith;
The truth his word alone reveals.

Living in the 'light of Christ'
Brings challenge to a darkened world.
The "barren deeds of darkness" are
Exposed for their ghastly nature;
There is no goodness there for us.

Living in the 'light of Christ'
Brings 'challenge' to our 'righteousness'.
The barrenness of ritual word
Unbacked by loving act and life;
In deed and word true righteousness is made.

Living in the 'light of Christ'
Enlightens our dim perceived 'truth'.
The truth of God in living Word;
Our words expressed with loving truth
Thus ensure we live in the 'light of Christ'.

Lent 4A
John 9: 1 - 41

Lord, we can 'see' as no
Generation before us 'saw'.
From the smallest 'things'
That make our being, to
The great depths of the Universe.

Lord, we are 'blind' as no
Generation before us was 'blind'.
For we have shut our eyes
To the truth and beauty of
Your way for your world.

Lord, we are arrogant as no
Generation before us was arrogant;
For we have decided that our
'Wisdom' is mightier than yours;
And fail to see how fruitless it is.

Lord, we need humility as no
Generation before us needed to be
Humble before you. By your
Grace open our eyes to the
Beauty and Truth of your Way.
