Lectionary Thoughts for Lent 3

This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Lent 3A
Exodus 17: 1 - 7

What a miserable lot we are!
So long as everything is 'all right'
We are happy to 'let God alone',
But at the first difficulty we
Are moaning like mad!

Then again are we not to
'Challenge' God when things
Are difficult. Must we meekly
Follow like sheep, or are we not
To follow with heads as well as hearts?

In the bad times as well as
In the good times we have
A God who is concerned for
Our best welfare, and we
Need to listen to him then.

Lent 3A
Psalm 95

Our God is utterly reliable
"Rock solid" is the phrase we use.
The joy of our praises comes
Out of the certainty of our faith.

The glory of God can be seen
In the beauty and power of
The Creation that God has
Made, to enable us to be.

We stand in total awe of
Such a God who shows such
Marvellous power and grace
Because of God's love for us.

Lord, we pray that you
Will help us by your
Spirit to be humble in
Your presence and in our service.

Lent 3A
Romans 5:1 - 11

The quality of our living
Is determined by the nature
Of that we hold most dear.

The quality of our thinking
Is determined by the values
Of that we hold to be true.

The opportunity for new
Quality of living comes
Out of our faith in Christ.

The opportunity for new
Depth of thinking comes
Through our hope in Christ.

The reality of new quality
Of living comes through
The power of the Holy Spirit.

The realisation of new quality
In thinking is enabled by
The enlightening of the Holy Spirit.

Lent 3A
John 4: 5 - 42

A chance encounter on the road
A foreigner met in a moment of need
A simple request for a cooling drink
A shocked reply from an outcast.

A strange response from the thirsty stranger
A practical riposte from the outcast
And a challenge to the strangers power
A second, even more strange, reply.

A sharp insight on her way of life
A recognition of prophetic power
A side-step about places of worship
A telling response on worship in truth.

An abandonment of work for witness
A half realised recognition
A question posed to her community
An acceptance of truth when seen for itself.
