Lectionary Thoughts for Epiphany 4

This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Epiphany 4A
1 Kings 17: 8 - 16

Command over the weather comes
Very strange to our ears.
Unquestioning obedience to the
Word of God is not our way.

Attempts to control the weather
Have been miserably ineffective.
Questioning the way of the weather
Has been vastly more productive.

Questioning the presence of god
Has led us into some very strange ways.
Hearing and heading 'the Word of God'
Has been vastly enabling and empowering.

Entering into partnership with God
Realises our potential for true humanity.

Epiphany 4A
Psalm 36: 5 - 10

The unfailing love of God is
An endless source of wonder and delight.

The faithfulness of God is
A constant help in troubles.

The righteousness of God is the
Supreme challenge to our way of life.

The justice of god is tempered
With mercy in Jesus Christ.

The ongoing presence of god
Is the "fountain of life".

The "saving power" of God
      Enlightens our dark world.

Epiphany 4A
1 Corinthians 1: 18 - 31

The power of the love of God
Is shown in Jesus on the cross.

The wisdom of the love of God
Is shown in Jesus on the cross.

The value of our worldly wisdom
Is debased by Jesus on the cross.

The 'virtue' of our worldly cleverness
Is nullified by Jesus on the cross.

Our worldly strength is shown
As weakness by Jesus on the cross.

"Our righteousness, our holiness, our liberation"
Are won for us by Jesus on the cross.

Epiphany 4A
John 2: 1 — 11

”Do what he tells you•
She told them.
”Do what I tell you•
His disciples were told.
”Follow my example•
Is his challenge to us.

The servants did the simple thing,
His power made the transformation.
The disciples simply waited, and
His Spirit made the transformation.

We, too, are called in simple things
To follow his example in life.
We, too, are called to wait patiently
And, in all things, great and small
The power of his Spirit transforms our lives.
