Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 9
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Proper 9A
Zechariah 9: 9 - 12
Such humility is not characteristic of earthly rulers. For here we see the image of a royal leader who knows he is reliant upon God for his position and achievements. There can be no doubt that Jesus, being extremely familiar with the Scriptures, especially the prophets, used this passage as the pattern for his entry into Jerusalem. In this we are challenged, as Christians, to recognise our dependence upon God's Holy Spirit. This prompts us to behave, as Paula exhorts, with both suitable humility and a right recognition of our abilities.
Thus we can develop those abilities to be most effective in the service of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Proper 9A
Psalm 145: 8 - 14
Our God is a gracious God,
Full of compassion for all.
Faithful to us through his Word;
Let us his great love recall.
Our God is a glorious God;
Creation sings his might.
With his Gospel we are shod
We sing his praise as is right.
Our God is a loving God,
His love extends to each one;
Through the power of his Word
At work through faith in his Son.
Proper 9A
Romans 7: 15 - 25a
Our human natures are divided
Into many competing parts
But our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Offers his Spirit to our hearts.
The good we would we cannot do
What I do is against my will
But our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Strengthens, helps us against all ill.
Our human state is close to death
Here the worldly causes us strife
But our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Rescues us to live by his life.
His praise befits our human nature
Praise to the Father who is Lord
Praise our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Praise the Spirit from his word.
Proper 9A
Matthew 11: 16 - 19, 25 - 30
We are a childish generation
Dissatisfied with things
We look for status in the world
No lasting help it brings.
We need a childlike trust in Christ
To satisfy our life
And look to him who leads us on
Throughout our worldly strife.
The simplest one can think on God
Through Christ who shows the way
The load that Christ asks us to bear
He carries day by day.
