Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 6
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Proper 6A
(Sunday between 12 and 18 June inclusive, eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, if after Trinity Sunday)
Exodus 19: 2 - 8a
The world of those, ancients, was little and strange
The forces of nature were not understood
The God whom they worshipped in awe and in fear
To them in their terror was dreadfully near.
The world to us, moderns, is markedly strange
God's work in creation we now understand
The God whom we worship with awe for his love
Has given us Jesus our Lord from above.

Psalm 100
Sing with joy of our God
Who made us by his Word
Let us sing with one voice
In salvation rejoice.
Sing with praise to our God
Who saves us through his Word
Let us live by his Grace
Show his love in each place.
Thank and bless our God now
By his spirit inspired
Let us do his good will
And remove all that's ill.
Sing praise to the Father
Sing praise to the Son
Sing praise to the Spirit
The divine Three in One.
Proper 6A

Romans 5: 1 - 8
The hope of divine glory
Our inheritance by faith
This is the Gospel story
The deliverance we have.
The peace we have through Jesus
Being justified by faith
Comes through the Gospel story
The deliverance we have.
Hope by the Holy Spirit
Overcoming suffering
Strength from the Gospel story
Enabling us all to sing.
Christ dying for us sinners
Offered to us by God's Love
Heart of the Gospel story
Thus all by Grace can live and move.

Matthew 9: 35 - 10: 8 (9 - 23)
As he did then so he does now. Our Lord calls us by name to the tasks he has for us to perform. As he did then so he does now. Our Lord, through the Holy spirit, releases the potential that is within us. Thus we find ourselves able to do that which he requires of us in the furtherance of his kingdom.
We are not to burden ourselves with unnecessary provision. That is not to say that we do not have to prepare. For we will need to sharpen and polish those talents which the Holy Spirit releases. This means that we need to be steeped in our knowledge of and relation to our Lord Jesus Christ. We also need to understand what we believe and why we believe it. We do not need to be advanced theologians, unless our mental capacity and interests lead us in that direction. We do need our personal commitment to Christ.
Above all we must guard against over-confidence and self-sufficiency. We are members of a great family which is there to help us and share both our weaknesses and our strengths. All in the love of Christ.
