Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 24
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Proper 24 A
Isaiah 45: 1 - 7
God is the Lord, there is no other;
In Jesus Christ he is our brother.
This the Lord has done for us
Glory be to God on high.
The whole universe god made to be
The works of his hand are great to see
This the Lord has done for us
Glory be to God on high.
The Spirit of God gives us our strength
In Christ we beat sin's troubles at length
This the Lord has done for us
Glory be to God on high.
God is the lord and through his spirit
By faith in Christ we gain our merit
This the Lord has done for us
Glory be to God on high.
Proper 24 A
Psalm 96: 1 - 9 (10 - 13)
Sing a new song to the Lord
Praise him for his wonderful Word.
Let the sound of praise be heard
Throughout all God's great creation
Alleluia.
Let us sing our praise to God;
Praise his Son who has our path trod;
Sing it well and not slipshod
Thus shall praise be worthy of God
Alleluia.
Sing our songs of God's great Love
Told us in the Gospel story;
This he gave us from above
Who he calls to share his glory
Alleluia.
Proper 24 A
1 Thessalonians 1: 1 - 10
Suggested tune "Royal Oak"
Grace to you and peace always
It is God's gift of love.
This to help us all our days
He sent us from above.
The Word from God the Father
In Jesus Christ his Son
Gives hope to each believer
And helps us every one.
Grace..
Our witness, all together
Our faith in Christ our Lord;
Ongoing perseverance
Our presence in the world.
Grace...
The power of the spirit
To help our works of grace;
The presence of the Spirit
With us in every place.
Grace...
The blessing of the Father'
The blessing of the Son;
The blessing of the Spirit
Our God the Three in One
Grace...
Proper 24 A
Matthew 22: 15 - 22
The work of God requires all our 'smarts';
To heed our brains as well as heed our hearts
So that our witness works in all its parts
Alleluia.
To serve the world and give its proper due
This is the word of Christ to me and you;
Thus we can all our daily work pursue
Alleluia.
And for our Lord, the service he demands
"Love one another" he to us commands;
Enfolding each within love's golden bands
Alleluia.
This balance brings Christ's fullness to each one;
The blessing that we have from God's own Son;
To take our place with him when life is done
Alleluia.
