Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 22

This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Proper 22A
Isaiah 5: 1 - 7

The whole of the earth is God's vineyard today;
Christ is the vine that has been planted in it.
We should be the fruit he looks for in plenty;
Our fruit is bitter with sin's surfeit.

The vineyard of God we trampled and damaged,
The vine we cut down, God raised it again.
The winepress we ruined, drying it's fountain;
But God's Holy Spirit lives on and will reign.

God loves us yet, though we spurn and deride him.
His Son, our Saviour, has taken our blame.
The power of the Spirit still works among us
Healing, enabling to lift us from shame.

Proper 22A
Psalm 80: 7 - 15

The fruits of the vine are many and varied
For each one of us has their gift from God.
To us, in faith, it is our great privilege;
This message God gives us throughout his Word.

God's living vine needs the most careful tending.
To be most fruitful each branch we must prune.
To speak and to live with God's holy message
The Spirit of God will keep us in tune.

We are the branches that Jesus is bearing,
Ours is the fruit the Spirit will ripen.
Here is God's vineyard where we live, work and play,
Our is the witness the Spirit will quicken.

Proper 22A
Philippians 3: 4b - 14

The outward show is no avail
'Tis inward grace alone that works.
Our pride and sin try to assail;
This fact of life we cannot shirk.

That inward grace is what we need
It is the Holy Spirit's strength.
Thus we can serve our Lord in deed
And witness to his Love at length.

Our inward grace gives outward sign
This is the life of Christian Love,
Which comes from having Christ in line
With every thought and word and move.

Praise God who made us all to be;
Praise Jesus who has raised us up.
The holy spirit gives us life
Our glorious God, the Holy Three.

Proper 22A
Matthew 21: 33 - 46

Whilst in any human group we need leaders and probably some recognised 'chain of command'; we, as Christians, must remember that our supreme leader is our Lord Jesus Christ.
Similarly, whilst we have been given the Earth as our inheritance, it behoves us to remember the ancient words of the psalmist "The Earth is the Lord's ...".
Thus for us to have any ongoing share in the very rich inheritance which is both ours and our descendants, we have to 'care for the Earth'. To do this we will have to combine the complex matters of 'social skills' with the equally complex concepts of 'ecology'. For the 'social skills' we have the superb guidance of our scriptures. These may be fairly summarised in "Love the Lord your God and your neighbour...". Taking as our example the life, death and resurrection of our lord Jesus Christ.
For the 'care of the Earth' we need to be taking a much longer-term view that currently practiced. We cannot afford to squander resources on short-term self satisfaction. To realise this objective may well involve many hard and difficult decisions. Only by living in the light of the Word of God will we be "a nation that yields proper fruit".
