Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 19
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Proper 19A
Genesis 50: 15 - 21
Family feuds can fester disastrously. When an offender says "I'm sorry" then the sufferer must accept the apology and try to renew the relationship. Such action requires a certain humility on both sides. Probably the worst thing that can be said is "I can never forgive..."; remember that cuts both ways.
The Christian faith shows us, in Jesus Christ, just what forgiveness can cost. The Christian faith shows us, in every generation, what can be achieved through forgiveness. The Christian faith enables us, through the Holy Spirit, to show that forgiveness in our daily lives.
Don't let the feud fester on ask, offer, your forgiveness today.

Proper 19A
Psalm 103: (1 - 7) 8 - 13
The Lord is righteous in all he does
He brings justice to everyone.
The lord realises all our woes,
Salvation comes in Jesus his Son.
God's compassion for us is awesome,
Our faults he does not always accuse.
His faithfulness is greatly winsome,
His power he never will abuse.
As the heavens tower above us
So outstanding is his Love for all
When our hearts are o'ercome with terrors
He hears all our prayers when'ere we call.
He has put away our offences
For in Jesus he shows us his Love;
His Spirit revives all our senses
Thus in his loving way we can move.
Proper 19A
Romans 14: 1 - 12
'Gently does it' is God's way
Dealing with us every day.
We should gentle people be
In each other Jesus see.
Strong and gentle was our Lord
Read this pattern in his Word;
Strong and gentle so we may
Love each other day by day.
Strong in heart and faith and love
Thus we can our faults resolve;
Strong in service to our lord
Strong to preach his gracious word.
Gentle in relationships
Gentle words speak from our lips,
Gently love and gentle be
To those who would Jesus see.

Matthew 18: 21 - 35
The whole business of forgiveness is a very tough one. The modern world tends to look on the act of forgiving as a sign of weakness. Whereas, if the forgiving is true, it is extremely hard to do. Forgiving is the outcome of real and deep Christian mercy toward the offender.
We, especially we who are Christian, need to remember that we owe everything to God. We also have, each one, a very personal debt to Christ. He has born for us, on the cross, the burden of our sin. By his sacrifice we are freed from that debt and we can never recompense Christ for what he has given for us.
