Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 18

This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Proper 18A
Ezekiel 33: 7 - 11

We, who are Christians, bear an awesome responsibility for the people of our time.
God has given us the amazing good news of his love for us in Jesus. Ours is the responsibility for spreading that good news - the Gospel.
In these 'politically correct' times of mutual respect there is real reticence, in western Christianity, over evangelism. If we are to be true to the witness of the Gospels and the astonishing insights of Saint Paul then we have no choice but to reiterate that "there is no salvation except in Christ•.
There is a great deal of wisdom in the ancient religions of the world, and a great deal of superstition. Judaism missed the boat - but holds to their worship of the one true God. Mohammedanism has much plagiarism; but in none of these is there salvation!
The great sorrow in all this is the very real and deep sincerity of those who hold to their faith, and the good work that many of them do. However, none of these factors mitigates against our vigorous Christian evangelising.

Proper 18A
Psalm 119: 33 - 40

Teach me, Oh Lord, the way of your Word Your love in my life shall be my reward. Led by your Word to walk in your way You are my life's guide every day. This is my story, this is my song Living by God's Word all the day long. Dispose my heart, Lord, to your love's way Help me to hear what your Spirit will say; Turning away from unworthy things Following Jesus, this my heart sings. Your righteousness, Lord, Gives to me life I am empowered to beat sin's strife. Jesus is with me holding me dear, Helps me to serve him while I am here.

Proper 18A
Romans 13: 8 - 14

Christian love sums up the law Here is life without a flaw. Live with Jesus as your friend His is Love which knows no end. Christian love requires our all To each one this is our call; In our good times and in ill Jesus Spirit helps us still. Christian love demands our best But the world gives us no rest As we struggle in sin's fight Jesus Christ will be our light.

Proper 18A

The problem of church discipline continues to be a difficult one. There can be no doubt that our Lord requires an extraordinary high level of forgiveness. This must not be confused with tolerance.
Forgiveness requires that the offender is made to realise the seriousness of their offence and is then offered Christian forgiveness - remembering always how our Lord dealt with the woman taken in adultery - "Go and SIN NO MORE!" It may be that the nature of the offence calls for some level of punishment - particularly if the offender is in a position of authority or trust.
We have to recognise that the standard that our Lord sets is, in the end, very hard. A persistent offender is to be cast out!
