Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 17
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Proper 17A
Jeremiah 15: 15 - 21
suggested tune: Laudate Dominum
Our service to God may well cost us dear
But strength from his hand he offers us here.
Our witness though costly will have its reward
Salvation in Jesus, our crucified Lord.
God's witness to us is faithful and true;
His spirit in us he'll always renew;
This life-giving power God offers to all
And with it he helps us sin's drag to forestall.
Then let us praise God the Father and Son,
The Spirit with them the great three in one;
Mysterious Godhead we hold them in awe
In worship and service with praise we adore.
Proper 17A
Psalm 26: 1 - 8
The world is very tempting, Lord,
But by your grace we do not fall;
We look for guidance in your Word
And Jesus hears us when we call.
Yet in the world we have to live;
But of the world we cannot be.
The love that to our friends we give
Is Jesus' pattern that we see.
The strength to balance world and heaven
Comes out of fellowship with you.
The Spirit that to us is given
Helps us to worship well and true.
Here in this house which we call yours
We join to help each other on.
This fellowship is truly ours
When with your Spirit we are one.
Proper 17A
Romans 12: 9 - 21
Love the Lord with all your heart
This must be the Christians part
Love the Lord with all your soul
These will keep your life-style whole.
Love your neighbour like your Lord
This he tells us in his word.
For with love we all can be
Builders of community.
Serve the Lord with spirit bright
Witness and stand for the right
Comfort those who are distressed
Try to do your very best.
In your life work the Lord's will
Paying back your good for ill;
Showing mercy in your life
For the troubles of sin's strife.
Praise the Father who has won
Our salvation through his Son;
Praise the Spirit who will be
Our experience of the Three.
Proper 17A
Matthew 16: 21 - 28
From time-to-time in our lives we are called upon to 'stand up and be counted'. For we, who are Christians in this increasingly irreligious western society, this may well mean being opposed to some powerful tide of current opinion. Our failure to do this, both as individuals and as a church organisation has seriously affected our relevance to modern living.
Our biggest single problem seems to be our inability to separate sin and sinner. For instance, in sexual matters there is no question that Bible teaching condemns homosexual acts. We have not said clearly enough that this is the case. However this does not mean that sinners are out casts. Remember our Lord's words to the woman taken in adultery "I do not condemn you, go and SIN NO MORE"
This is but one example having current significance. It may be that the sin of greed, especially greed for possession based status, is even more serious.
Christ challenges us to 'turn round on the road' and face our own 'Gethsemane'.
