Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 16
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Proper 16A
Isaiah 51: 1 - 6
The origins of the first global civilization are to be found in a single family that first realised there is but one God.
Into their stumbling and chequered history God interposed himself in Christ.
Out of the turbulent development of the Christian faith came the western European style of democratic government.
From the freedom which this allowed there arose the tremendous power of science and technology.
If we allow our selves to drift away from Christ's teaching we stand in real danger of destroying ourselves.
If we, through faith in Christ, temper our greed and selfishness we can indeed build the kingdom of God in the earth.
Proper 16A
Psalm 138
Suggested tune: Llanfair
Praise the Lord for all his love Alleluia
Earth below and heaven above
Praise him for his faithfulness
God-in-Christ we all can bless
God has given us all we need
Through his Spirit to live indeed;
When we seek him he is there
Offering answer to our prayer
Thus in Jesus we are saved
For our sin his life he gave
God has raised him up on high
Now and ever we must cry Alleluia.
Proper 16A
Romans 12: 1 - 8
suggested tune: Duke Street
What shall we offer our good Lord?
All he has given us through his grace.
Witness for him in work and word
This is our sacrifice of praise.
Worship him with mind and heart
Conforming to his way of love
Service for him in every part
His life in us we then can prove.
Use all the gifts that he has given
To help each other here on earth
Thus in the spirit of his heaven
We all shall know he gives us worth.

Matthew 16: 13 - 20
suggested tune: Theodora
Jesus Christ alone is Lord
God reveals this in his Word.
Jesus came our souls to save
Life, through faith in him we have.
With the Spirit's healing breath
We can overcome sin's death
By the Spirit's guiding light
We can find our way aright.
Jesus is our neighbour now
Following him we can know how
To live with our neighbour here
His inheritance most dear.
All praise to our Father God
And to Jesus Christ our Lord
Praises to the Spirit give
Three in one, by these we live.
