Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 14
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Proper 14A
1 Kings 19: 9 - 18
The challenge of God comes fresh to each one
To witness and serve for Jesus his Son
To look at our life-style - give Jesus his place
And follow his pattern for the human race.
The promise of God in his living Word
Fills us with the grace of Jesus our Lord;
To show that compassion he showed on the tree
And work, through his Spirit, to set people free.
The challenge of God, creation to use,
Injustice to end and spread the good news
Of full life for all of his people on earth
And show, by God's Spirit, their infinite worth
Proper 14A
Psalm 85: 8 - 13
Let me hear the words of God the Lord.
Open my mind to the breadth of his word
To find, through his Spirit, peace in my heart
And wisdom to guide me to live my part.
May faith and love be joined in my life;
That justice and peace will conquer sin's strife;
God's love gift to all the people on earth,
Salvation in Jesus, to show their worth.
Proper 14A
Romans 10: 5 - 15
Salvation! Oh Salvation!
The gift of God by faith.
Redemption comes through Jesus
Who died upon the cross.
Salvation! Oh Salvation!
In Jesus Christ our Lord.
The hearts faith leads to rightness
And helps confess our sin.
Salvation! Oh Salvation!
God's gospel to us all
Is shown to us in Jesus
Raised up for us by God.
Proper 14A
Matthew 14: 22 - 33
Oh that I might know the strength of faith in me
To do in the world the work of my Lord;
To follow, like Peter, the way of his Word.
Thus, through God's Spirit, to conquer my fear
And show to people that God holds them most dear
This is the message we all need to see.
Oh that there might be the power of prayer in me;
And put my trust in God to know his will.
For how else can my turbulent mind be still?
The world is a trial to all who have faith
The answer we have when we meet God in death.
God's presence in life, That helps me to be.
