Lectionary Thoughts for Proper 11
This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.
Year A
Proper 11A
Wisdom 12: 13, 16 - 19
Our God is full of power and might
The universes is his concern
His charge to us is "get it right"
It is my Wisdom you must ;earn.
From God alone comes truth and grace
His justice and his mercy sure
He calls upon the human race
To see that justice will endure.
For God has not left us alone
He knows our weakness and our need
His presence with us in his Son
Shows that he cares for us indeed.
We share the power and might of God
But if we are to 'get it right'
We need the guidance of his Word
And live as children of the light.
All praise to God the Father be
Praise to the Holy Spirit's power
Praise through the Son the Holy Three
Our God's mysterious, divine dower.
Proper 11A
Isaiah 44: 6 - 8
Who has designed the universe
But our God alone?
Who has empowered the universe?
This, the God we own.
What enlightens the universe?
God's Spirit is the source.
Who enlightens us, each one,
This sets our life's course.
Who has saved the universe
But God's Son alone?
Who gives new meaning to life?
This the Christ we own.
Proper 11A
Psalm 86: 11 - 17
Open my mind, Oh Lord,
That I may know your Word.
Open, by grace, my heart
That I may live my part.
Teach me to walk your way,
Follow you day by day;
Your truth to praise and love,
Your grace in me to move.
Your help, my strength and stay;
Christ in me every day.
Your praise shall be my life,
Even in sorrow's strife.
Proper 11A
Romans 8: 12 - 25
Spirit of the living God
Life enabling, freeing Word
Making us God's children true
Free to serve him through and through.
If our suffering here is hard
Our Lord helps us by his Word,
For this life is not the end
Then his glory he will send.
Glory to the Father be,
Son and Spirit, Holy Three.
These together merit praise
Let us now our anthems raise.
Proper 11A
Matthew 13: 24 - 30, 36 - 43
Am I really like a field, Lord?
Is this my image in your Word?
Yet from the field comes our life's fill,
Your marvellous and mysterious will.
In me is planted your word's seed,
For all my good to grow indeed.
Yet sin's temptation compass me
And only Christ can set me free.
For you, my field its fruit must bear,
Then only if your Word I hear;
And hearing make it real indeed,
Powerful to answer every need.
