Lectionary Thoughts for Pentecost

This, very mixed, collection of ideas are the result of looking at the Lectionary readings and noting the thoughts that 'popped' into my mind. I have, very deliberately, not tried to 'polish' them in any way, mainly because I lack the finesse necessary.

Pentecost A
Acts 2: 1 - 21

The images of power have become commonplace.
We are no longer awed by the power of god.
For we ourselves have released God's power for our use.
Our faith led the way to know God's Creation.

The Spirit of the Living god has opened our minds
To see and perceive what it is that God has done.
Such knowledge is almost too wonderful for our use
Unless we are guided by the Holy spirit.

The Spirit of the Living god has inspired our minds
To understand how we can use what god has made.
We have abused that power and spoilt what god has made;
Only the Spirit of the Living God saves us.

Pentecost A
Numbers 11: 24 - 30

We seem to think that inspiration
Is the privilege of a select
And special minority.

Yet this ancient story tells us how
It is the aim of God to give us
All access to his spirit.

Thus we find the secret of being
Inspired by the Spirit of God
Is in opening our hearts.

But inspiration is more than mere
Emotion. It sparks the mind alive
To see what God does in us.

Our "talents gifts and graces, Lord,"
We give into your blessed hands for
Service in your Kingdoms cause.

Pentecost A
Psalm 104: 24 - 34, 35b

The spirit of the living God
Was at the beginning of the
Creation of the universe

The spirit of the living God
Was in the minds of the psalmists
As they composed their praise to god.

The spirit of the living God
Was given to those who were the
First to follow Him in the world

The spirit of the living God
Still comes to us when we are true
To the faith which we hold in Him.

Pentecost A
1 Corinthians 12: 3b - 13
(An antiphonal meditation)

The spirit of the living God
Inspires our faith in Christ

The spirit of the living God
Offers various gifts.

The spirit of the living God
Enables our service.

The spirit of the living God
Gives knowledge and wise speech.

The spirit of the living God
Enables our healing.

The spirit of the living God
Breaks down our barriers.

The spirit of the living God
Makes one body in Christ.

Pentecost A
John 20: 19 - 31

The risen Christ comes to us
In spirit and in Truth
To offer us God's power
And peace for those of faith.

He speaks to us in words of
Love and Grace which give us
New hope for our living in
Him with joy for each day.

Our doubt he dispels with the
Fact of his living self.
Our personal needs he meets
By the love he shows us.

Our new faith he then blesses
With words that encourage
Our life in this world that would
Be most hard without him.

Pentecost A
John 7: 37 - 39

By faith we have in Christ
A source of flowing power
That fills our lives with hope
To lift us hour by hour.

This faith we have in Christ
Transforms the driest day
To make the weakest strong
And give the mourners joy.

Our faith we have in Christ
Commands us to be one
His spirit helps us be
One family in Him.
