Features common to all homes:

All residents enjoy the freedoms and civil liberties associated with living as normal citizens in the community. They are actively encouraged to pursue their own interests and hobbies, both within the home and in the wider community in which their home is situated. Since the Homes are Christian Homes, residents are encouraged to share in daily family prayers, where possible, but this is not obligatory. These prayers are held each weekday in the mornings and Holy Communion is celebrated monthly.

Residents may have their own telephones fitted in their rooms and all rooms are equipped with a TV aerial socket.

Each room is fitted with a call bell to enable residents to summon a member of staff should the need arise and all rooms are equipped to recognised standards for disabled residents.

History:

"Westerley" was formerly a hotel until purchased by Mutual Aid Homes and opened on 17th March 1951 as a Residential Care Home for elderly people. The property next door, Elmhurst, was purchased by the Society in the early 1970s and, after extensive alterations including a link between the two buildings, was opened on 6th May 1972.

Facilities:

BedroomThe Home is registered with the National Care Standards Commission to accommodate 29 residents, including up to four with special needs relating to mental infirmity. There are 26 rooms available for occupation by residents, all but three of which have en-suite facilities. Residents are normally accommodated in single rooms but eight of the rooms are suitable to be made available for shared occupation by a married couple if required. Residents' bedrooms are situated on the ground and two upper floors which are served by a passenger lift. Rooms in the former Elmhurst property on each floor are accessed either by a few steps, or by chair lifts, which can be operated with staff supervision. Several rooms have splendid views over Morecambe Bay and the surrounding hills.

LoungeOn the ground floor there is a large dining room and day lounge, both of which overlook Morecambe Bay. A second lounge on the ground floor is used as a TV lounge and library. Daily prayers and occasional entertainments are held in the dining room, which is equipped with a loop system for the hard of hearing.

Our lovely gardens are greatly appreciated by residents and visitors to the Home and town, and residents can relax in the grounds or in the two summerhouses.

A ramp has been installed to both entrances to the Home to ease access for the disabled. There is adequate car parking in the grounds and across the road, next to the garden.

There are regular visits from the Chiropodist, hairdresser and mobile library. A variety of books are available in the Devotions Lounge and on the link where you can read and admire the glorious views.

Our Social Committee arrange various social events, entertainment and also outings to the Lakes and countryside.

There is a weekly Bible Study Group and Methodist Church Members will arrange transport to the Church if required.

We enjoy excellent support from the local Doctors and District Nursing team.
